Cosmetic Braces

Orthodontic treatment can give you the smile of your dreams, save you thousands of dollars less than porcelain veneers or crowns, and get you straight teeth without anyone noticing. Why wait to correct your smile? Saratoga Springs’s cosmetic dentist, Dr. Moreau, can offer you an affordable, comfortable, efficient, and minimally invasive way to have a more radiant and confident smile with the magic of orthodontics.

Saratoga Springs’ dentist, Dr. Moreau, has incorporated orthodontics into his restorative and cosmetic treatment philosophy because it is a conservative option to restoring proper bite relationship, maintaining healthy gums, and creating an attractive smile. There are primarily two main types of orthodontic treatment: short-term (lasting 3-9 months) or comprehensive (lasting 1-2 years). Within these two types of treatment, there are two approaches: either fixed appliances (braces) or removable appliances (clear aligners).

Short-term Orthodontics - Six Month Smiles

Short-term orthodontics, commonly referred to as Accelerated Orthodontics, Fast Orthodontics, Power Braces or Six Month Smiles, is limited in scope, focusing on improving the appearance of the upper and/or lower front teeth in a very short time period- usually between 3-9months. The objective is to straighten the front teeth without changing the overall bite relationship. Short-term braces are the most natural, most conservative, least invasive, and a more affordable approach for you to improve your appearance. Treatment may consist of the placement of clear braces or clear removable aligners. Dr. Moreau’s appliance of choice for short-term orthodontics is Six Month Smiles or Invisalign, MTM Clear Aligner, or EZ Align

Comprehensive Orthodontics

Comprehensive orthodontics is the most common form of orthodontic treatment involving the alignment of teeth, establishing proper jaw function, and the bite relationship of the upper and lower teeth. Treatment consists of the placement of braces on all the upper and lower teeth and being connected by wires, or the placement of upper and lower clear, removable aligners fitted over the teeth. Treatment time may vary anywhere between 9-24 months, depending on the situation and desired outcome. Dr. Moreau’s appliance of choice for comprehensive orthodontics is Insignia Damon Clear or Invisalign.

Six Month Smiles

Six Month Smiles is a revolutionary orthodontic procedure for adults who want to improve their smile by straightening the front teeth in a short period of time. Dr. Moreau uses clear braces and light forces to move the teeth. Since Six Month Smiles is not concerned with perfecting the bite in your back teeth, the treatment time is shortened. The advantages of Six Month Smiles are:

  • average treatment time of only six months (may vary up to 9)
  • typically less expensive than traditional braces, aligner therapy, or veneers
  • clear braces so they are hardly noticeable

Insignia Damon Clear

Insignia is an interactive orthodontic software system that allows Dr. Moreau to create your smile specifically for you. The Insignia software uses virtual 3D imaging to generate a model of your mouth. Dr. Moreau is able to analyze the most effective and efficient way to help you achieve a ‘wow’ smile. Once the treatment plan is created, Dr. Moreau will order one of the most advanced brace systems available, Damon Clear braces, and with custom archwires, your teeth will be guided into the correct position smoothly and directly. This system reduces treatment time, giving you the smile you want sooner than you ever thought possible.

Some of the benefits of the Insignia Damon Clear system are:

  • precise bracket placement and predictable treatment outcomes
  • fewer scheduled appointments
  • custom braces for you
  • 100% personalized treatment results in reduced time in braces

Invisalign – Clear Braces

Invisalign is the invisible way to straighten teeth using a series of clear, custom-made plastic aligners. Once Dr. Moreau discusses your treatment options, impressions, photographs, and x-rays are taken of your teeth and face, and Invisalign carefully reviews and translates the doctor’s instructions into a series of custom aligners. Each set of aligners is worn for about 2 weeks, gently moving your teeth gradually until you have achieved the intended result. The average length of treatment is usually 12 months, depending on the specific case. The advantages of Invisalign are:

  • no metal wires or brackets
  • aligners are comfortable
  • comfortable eating because they can be removed
  • clear, invisible, and hardly noticeable

MTM Clear Align and EZ Align

MTM Clear Align and EZ Align are clear, removable aligner systems that are specifically indicated for minor tooth corrections. They are worn for a short period of time and are a fraction of the cost of the other therapies.

Tooth Bonding & Cosmetic Contouring

Cosmetic Contouring and dental tooth bonding are techniques that are used to alter the shape of worn or chipped teeth to reestablish harmony, balance, and beauty to a smile. Dental bonding is an effective tool that Dr. Moreau utilizes to repair damaged teeth or enhance a smile.

Dental Tooth Bonding

Dental bonding is a simple procedure generally completed in a single visit, where Dr. Moreau uses the highest quality composite material to create a more pleasing contour to teeth and improve the smile. While the results can be quite dramatic and highly aesthetic, tooth bonding may require more frequent touch-ups or replacements as compared to porcelain veneers. Tooth bonding may be used to:

  • restore worn, chipped, broken, discolored, stained, yellow, crooked, misshapen teeth
  • close spaces between teeth
  • protect teeth from decay

Cosmetic Contouring

Cosmetic Contouring is a procedure that Dr. Moreau frequently uses to slightly reshape teeth so as to create a more pleasing contour and smile. It is a minor procedure that can have dramatic effects on the beauty of a smile. Sometimes, Dr. Moreau will combine aesthetic tooth reshaping along with dental bonding to create the desired effect.

Dental Bonding, Cosmetic Contouring, Porcelain Crowns or Veneers?

Although cosmetic contouring and dental bonding can be completed in a single visit, sometimes the dental situation or the patient's desired effect requires more permanent treatment. At that point, dental crowns or veneers might be considered for their longevity, durability, and beauty.

Teeth Whitening

There are many effective over-the-counter whitening systems in the marketplace today that can satisfy the demands of patients. However, the dentist-supervised teeth whitening remains the safest and most effective method for brightening teeth. Dr. Moreau offers two options for teeth whitening: an in-office Power Teeth Whitening and at-home supervised teeth whitening.

Teeth Whitening Options

In-Office Power Teeth Whitening

After an initial evaluation is completed to determine what whitening system would work best for the patient, the teeth are thoroughly cleaned. A special teeth whitening gel containing a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide is applied to the teeth for a period of 30-60 minutes. In-office teeth whitening can often be accomplished in one visit, and home whitening trays may be recommended to enhance the results.

At-Home Dentist Supervised Teeth Whitening

Impressions are taken of the mouth, and a custom-fitted mouth tray is fabricated. It will receive a teeth whitening gel to be worn by the patient for a few hours each day or night. The trays can be adjusted to lighten individual teeth. The average patient will wear mouth trays for one to two weeks. More severe stains can often be improved with extended use of a home whitening system

Frequent Teeth Whitening Questions

Where does teeth whitening work the best?

Teeth whitening procedures can help whiten teeth if the teeth are coffee-stained, yellow, or discolored due to aging, cigarette discolored teeth or dark teeth that have had root canal treatment.

How long will teeth whitening last?

The main variables that affect the longevity of teeth whitening are the frequency of ingestion of acidic drinks, especially wine, coffee, soft drinks, and tea. Subjecting teeth to frequent exposure to tobacco products as well as acid drinks increases the need for more frequent touch-up whitening applications.

Who is a candidate for whitening?

Practically everyone over the age of 13 is a candidate for some form of whitening. A preliminary examination by our cosmetic dentistry team is conducted to determine which whitening system would work best for you.

Does whitening hurt?

Whitening can be uncomfortable for some people during and following the whitening procedure, which is why our cosmetic dentistry team takes the necessary steps to ensure that your experience is as comfortable and pleasant as possible.

How does whitening work?

Cosmetic Porcelain Bridges

A dental bridge is a device that fills the space created when a tooth or teeth have been extracted. The replacement tooth is connected by dental crowns that are bonded to the supporting adjacent teeth. A bridge may also be supported with the placement of a dental implant. With the latest materials and technology, Dr. Moreau, in most situations, can design all porcelain bridges, thereby eliminating unsightly metal that is often associated with porcelain that is fused to metal crowns and bridges. When placed in the mouth, all porcelain bridges create a most aesthetically pleasing look and feel to the tongue, lips, and gums.

Missing Teeth Options

In order to safeguard the integrity of teeth, gums, bone, and a vibrant smile, the replacement of missing teeth is most important. The loss of teeth can lead to teeth shifting, which leads to increased risk for further tooth fracture, as well as gum, bite, or jaw problems. Depending on the situation, there can be a number of options available to replace missing teeth, which include dental bridges, dental implants, or partial dentures. A consultation with Dr. Moreau will provide you with the necessary information upon which you can decide what option would work best for you.

Dental Bridge vs Implant

There are a number of considerations that have to be reviewed before deciding upon whether a dental implant or bridge is the treatment of choice to replace missing teeth. Not every missing tooth situation is a candidate for an implant. The dental implant has to have adequate space and bone support for it to be successful, and not every missing tooth situation is a candidate for an implant. The adjacent teeth may be in need of dental crowns, so it might be more beneficial to place a bridge than an implant. The investment in a dental implant is higher initially than a dental bridge, but it is less likely to require future work.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers can be the perfect solution to worn, discolored, or crooked teeth and an aging smile. Veneers can shape your smile with minimal to no tooth preparation. It is like having ‘instant orthodontics’!

Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin pieces of porcelain that are affixed to the front of a tooth and designed so that they look and feel like natural teeth, simply changing the shape of your smile. Veneers are used to improve the strength and aesthetics of aging teeth that have unsightly fillings or have been worn, chipped, stained, yellowed, discolored, misshapen, or crooked. Veneers can also be used to close spaces, altering the shape and contour of the adjacent teeth.

Before and After Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers can be a very conservative option to magically transform your smile and restore confidence in your smile, so that you will more spontaneously flash your warm presence to the world. Check out before and after photos in our Smile Gallery

Dental Crowns

Saratoga Springs cosmetic dentist Dr. Mark Moreau uses mostly all porcelain crowns to protect and restore a tooth’s strength and natural beauty. Occasionally, Dr. Moreau may suggest a tooth receive a gold crown if there is a real chance of a porcelain crown fracture. Dr. Moreau does not offer in-office computer-fabricated dental crowns, but relies on the artistic abilities of a skilled artist and porcelain technician to create his custom crowns.

Crowns restore teeth to their natural health, strength, beauty, and functions

When teeth are cracked, broken, or crooked, have had root canal treatment, or have extensive decay, a dental crown is the treatment of choice to restore their strength and beauty. Sometimes a crown is commonly referred to as a cap since it fits over the entire tooth like a thimble. A crown might be needed in the following situations:

  • To rebuild a tooth that has experienced severe wear and has an increased risk of fracture
  • To restore a tooth that has visible crack lines, since these are precursors of fracture
  • To restore the strength of a tooth that is broken
  • To restore the strength of a tooth that already has a large filling and lacks support to receive a replacement filling
  • To hold a part of a dental bridge in place
  • To cover a misshapen or discolored tooth
  • To cover a dental implant

There are four general types of materials that crowns can be constructed of:

  • All porcelain crowns
  • Porcelain fused to metal crowns
  • All metal crowns (gold)
  • Zirconium crowns (not as aesthetic as all porcelain crowns, but much stronger)

In most situations, Dr. Moreau will either select a zirconium crown for strength and an all porcelain crown for its more natural-looking aesthetics.

Most Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

Is the dental crown procedure painful?

Patients need not be anxious during a crown procedure because Dr. Moreau and his team strive to ensure that each patient is comfortable and relaxed.

How much discomfort will I have after the procedure?

You may experience a little sensitivity to cold or minor soreness of the gum tissue, but that is usually managed with a couple of Tylenol. The tooth may be sore for a longer period of time if there was extensive decay or breakdown to the tooth but usually this is temporary.

Can a metal crown be replaced with a porcelain dental crown?

Occasionally, an unsightly gray (metal) line may show next to a worn-out porcelain-to-metal crown; or an existing crown may have recurrent decay around it; or the old crown may just need replacement because of its discoloration. In most situations, Dr. Moreau is able to replace old metal crowns with new porcelain crowns. Periodically, dental crowns need to be replaced due to being exposed to problematic wear patterns, salivary pH changes, or poor home care habits of the patient.

    Are dental crowns expensive?

The cost of a dental crown will vary depending on the type of material and the specific condition of the teeth and mouth. An investment in a dental crown for a tooth is the most cost-effective protection that a patient can give themselves to ensure a lifetime of enjoyment in chewing, smiling, and speaking with their natural teeth. Prior to any treatment, our team will present you with a full review of the procedure, including the cost. We accept most major dental insurance and offer interest-free financing through CareCredit.
